Rone Chiu, Chairman of Taiwan Nano & Micro-Photonics, has been elected as a Director of the 24th Board of Directors and Supervisors of the Taichung National Taiwan University Alumni Association. He will support the newly elected President, Mei-Tzu Chen, in leading the association to new heights. This honor not only reflects his commitment to serving the community but also highlights the growing recognition of silicon photonics technology within and beyond the NTU alumni network, further bolstering the prominence of Taiwan Nano & Micro-Photonics in this burgeoning industry.

As a graduate of NTU’s Institute of Applied Mechanics (Class of 1986), Rone Chiu's expertise and contributions to the field of silicon photonics innovation were key factors in his election. His background exemplifies the excellence expected of NTU alumni, known for their leadership across diverse fields.

The Taichung NTU Alumni Association upholds the principles of NTU’s General Alumni Association, fostering connections and collaborations among alumni through lectures, newsletters, and various events. This year’s board election was highly competitive, demonstrating the alumni’s enthusiasm for giving back to society. Upon his election, Chairman Rone congratulated Mei-Tzu Chen on her appointment as President and expressed his eagerness to share insights into the future development and applications of silicon photonics sensing technologies with the association.

In the association’s bulletin, Rone Chiu emphasized the immense growth potential of silicon photonics in the global market. According to Yole Intelligence, the silicon photonics die market is projected to grow from USD 151 million in 2021 to USD 972 million by 2027, with a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36%. While current applications are dominated by the telecommunications sector, sensing technologies hold significant promise for the future.

Silicon photonics sensing has transformative applications in the health and wellness sector, from non-invasive diagnostics to environmental monitoring. Chairman Rone envisions leveraging the alumni network, particularly professionals in healthcare, to explore market opportunities and establish a foundation of trust within the silicon photonics ecosystem. By fostering collaboration among alumni and industry stakeholders, he aims to enhance Taiwan’s international competitiveness and propel the field toward new milestones.
