Taiwan Nano & Micro-Photonics (N&M) has been awarded funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Industrial Development Bureau under the Industrial Upgrade and Innovation Platform program for its groundbreaking project on high-performance single-crystal multi-functional silicon photonics narrowband mid-infrared chips.

This functional chip aligns seamlessly with Taiwan's national policy to advance the IC design industry. As one of the few domestic leaders specializing in mid-infrared silicon photonics technology, N&M’s innovative breakthroughs promise to drive the growth of functional chips, strengthening Taiwan’s global competitiveness in silicon photonics.

The high-performance mid-infrared chip developed by N&M leverages the advantages of silicon semiconductor processes, achieving multi-wavelength mid-infrared light sources on a single chip. It features sharp and thermally stable waveforms, significantly enhancing precision for mid-infrared applications while reducing the complexity and cost associated with multi-chip designs.

The chip operates on the principle of non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) absorption and is designed to detect various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Its single-crystal, multi-wavelength advantage, paired with proprietary algorithms, enables precise identification of specific gases. This positions it as a pivotal solution for environmental monitoring, food safety, and biomarker detection, contributing to advancements in sustainable development.

This innovation establishes a critical technological platform for Taiwan in AI olfactory sensing and opens new application pathways in sustainable environmental monitoring and human health biomarker detection. Taiwan Nano & Micro-Photonics continues to drive global technological progress while making meaningful contributions to environmental sustainability.
